Hawaii Fashion Month

New designers show off a lot of creativity.

The official kick-off of the inaugural Hawaii Fashion Month took place Tuesday night, October 1, at Ward Centers. This red carpet event featured new designs from Akihiko Izukura — a world-renowned natural fiber and textile artist who descends from a prestigious line of master silk weavers for the imperial family of Japan — were unveiled during the runway show.

Hawaii Fashion Month, a DBEDT sponsored initiative, is a compilation of nearly 50 events throughout October to promote the state as a fashion destination and strengthen the local industry.

“Through Hawaii Fashion Month and efforts year-round, we hope to make it a billion-dollar industry that showcases Hawaii’s diversity and local design and manufacturing talent,” Gov. Neil Abercrombie said in a statement. “Hawaii Fashion Month will also build our strength as an international retail destination while creating jobs and keeping hard-earned dollars in Hawaii.

“OUTFIT”, the signature trade show event, was held below the TJMaxx store on October 2-3. It featured over 60 up and coming designers, as well as established firms such as Hilo Hattie, Jams and Reyn’s. A range of seminars and fashion shows were held daily covering topics and styles.
