It’s not always a straightforward process for businesses to learn how to export their products, but it definitely can be worth it, creating higher profit margins. Watch the KHON2 video for details.
Now the state wants to help businesses by offering a new program: Hawaii’s State Trade Expansion Program, known as HiSTEP, is built on a multifaceted approach to export development. “Funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the program begins with comprehensive export assistance, readiness, counseling and training that leads into a menu of targeted and individualized activities designed to generate new export sales for participating small businesses,” explains DBEDT’s Jaime Lum.
The program is administered by the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) which partners with several agencies and organizations to carry out the HiSTEP program. These partners include the Hawaii Pacific Export Council, U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Small Business Development Centers, Innovate Hawaii (High Technology Development Corporation), SBA Hawaii District Office, Hawaii Department of Agriculture, and the Foreign Trade Zone No. 9.
