What is the Hawaii Remote Work Project?

The Hawaii Remote Work Project is a pilot program designed to provide Hawaii’s residents with expanded opportunities to live, work and play in Hawaii by providing valuable services to companies outside of our state through remote work.

Statutory Authority:

Under 202-2 HRS, the Hawaii Remote Work Project is designed to stimulate through research and demonstration projects those industrial and economic development efforts that offer the most immediate promise of expanding the economy of the State.

Partnership with Hawaii’s Public Workforce Development System:

The Hawaii Remote Work Project was developed as a demonstration project in partnership with the State of Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Workforce Development Council and Workforce Development Division and the American Job Centers at each of the four counties.

This website is a one-stop resource of Hawaii’s residents looking for remote work opportunities. The Hawaii Remote Work Project provides access to online job opportunities, connection to the State of Hawaii Workforce Development Council’s Workforce Resiliency Initiative and the related Digital Literacy programs include basic digital literacy assessment and training offered through Northstar as well as online training opportunities currently being negotiated with Linkedin Learning and Coursera.

The Hawaii Remote Work Project also provide information and resources for businesses that are interested in hiring remote workers. This includes how to start a business in Hawaii as well as information on protection for your Hawaii workforce.

The purpose of the Hawaii Remote Work Project is to demonstrate the ability for Hawaii’s residents to learn and earn in the global cyber marketplace. This project takes our first step in developing a foundation for the residents of Hawaii to become acclimated in competing in the global digital economy. The project brings together the livelihood and learning components of the Broadband Hui’s Digital Equity Declaration motto of Access, Literacy and Livelihood (ALL) for the residents of Hawaii through a linkage with the Workforce Development Council’s Workforce Resiliency Initiatives Digital Literacy program.

The Hawaii Remote Work Project is designed to complement the employment and re-employment services offered at the American Job Centers and the State of Hawaii Workforce Development Council and Hawaii’s official public job board, Hirenet Hawaii. Through this partnership, the Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism connected with businesses interested in offering Hawaii residents remote work opportunities and partnered with the American Job Centers and the Workforce Development Council to fill those positions through Hawaii’s public workforce system. In short, DBEDT created the opportunity for these jobs and the WDC of DLIR worked to fill the jobs with qualified Hawaii residents.
