Taiwans-Education-Leader-Upbeat-About-HawaiiAs part of DBEDT’s initiative to increase the number of foreign students studying in Hawaii, DBEDT brought together Dr. Li-ling Liang, Director of the Education Division with the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office (TECO) in Los Angeles to meet with Hawaii’s education officials.  Dr. Liang and Ms. Huichen Pan, senior TECO education officer, met with members of the State Department of Education and leadership from the Study Hawaii Educational Consortium to provide an overview of Taiwan’s international education policies including study abroad and study in Taiwan programs.

The delegation met with University of Hawaii in a separate meeting.  The Taiwan Ministry of Education is interested in increasing the number of Taiwanese students studying abroad and in recruiting certified teachers to teach English in Taiwan.  A draft Memorandum of Understanding was developed by the Ministry of Education for the State Department of Education’s consideration.

The meeting provided members of the Study Hawaii Educational Consortium an excellent opportunity to meet Dr. Liang who will head the Taiwan exhibition at the 2014 NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego in May.  The national conference attracts over 8,400 international education professionals who use the conference to recruit foreign students, establish bilateral educational partnerships and to network with their peers from across the globe.
